Tribute to John van Niekerk

Wednesday, 28 July 2021 by Brian Paxton

We pay tribute to John van Niekerk, a long time stalwart of the Peninsula Bridge Club and a bridge teacher of note. John and his son both died of Covid in early July 2021.

Arnie Pool, a close friend and bridge colleague of John, has penned the following recollection of John:

"It is with great sadness that we at Peninsula Bridge Club learned of the passing of one of our longest standing members, John van NIekerk. We pass our heart felt condolences to his family.

"John loved his bridge and used to host many a Saturday game at his home. We have to thank his wife, Iris, who always provided the very ample and tasty eats on such occasions.

"John, through his attitude and example helped to hold the club together. He was dependable and never late. John was a greatly valued member of  the club. We will certainly miss him but his legacy will be at the forefront of any attempts to resuscitate the club in these Covid ravaged times."
